Finland

Robin Boyd’s only trip to Finland came in July 1964, a brief visit on a longer world trip. From Helsinki Robin and Patricia visited the suburban new town of Tapiola, which drew praise from Boyd in an article titled Planners’ Dream Comes True. Boyd’s slide collection includes several photos of Tapiola, plus a single slide showing the Savoy Hotel in Helsinki, whose top-storey restaurant was designed by Alvar and Aino Aalto. It’s not clear which other Aalto buildings Boyd visited in person, but Boyd had been writing about Aalto’s work since at least 1947. The train station in Helsinki, which Robin and Patricia passed through on their way to Saint Petersburg, was designed by Eliel Saarinen, the father of Eero Saarinen.
