Letters on Saarinen
Through his close friendship with Walter Gropius, Boyd was invited to be the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Bemis Professor at the School in the North American academic year 1956-7. Robin and Patricia Boyd were based in Cambridge, Massachusetts for the year. During this time, Boyd travelled widely within the USA and met with many architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Eero Saarinen, Paul Rudolph and visited the offices of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill and the General Motors Technical Center Detroit. During this time, Boyd wrote letters to Grounds and Romberg back in Melbourne about these visits and who he met, including much gossip. Boyd frequently touched on Eero Saarinen’s American work in these letters - those featured here recount Boyd’s impressions and thoughts.
