Building Modern Sweden
Robin Boyd almost certainly acquired Building Modern Sweden (1951) after he and Patricia returned from their Haddon Scholarship trip (1950) to Great Britain and Europe. Written by Swedish architect Karl Bertil Hultén (1916-2014) and with a foreword by British town planner, Sir Patrick Abercrombie, the book contains numerous photographs and descriptions of many of the modern buildings and sites the Boyds visited and photographed in Sweden, including Sigurd Lewerentz’s crematorium (1923) and Theatre (1947) in Malmö (1923), and Hjalmar Cederström’s Södersjukhuset (South Hospital, 1944). A highlight of Robin and Patricia’s visit to Stockholm was the Gondolen restaurant at Slussen (1935) designed by Olof Thunström and Eskil Sundahl and suspended eight stories above the street within a bridge-like truss. The book’s photograph of the restaurant interior is almost exactly the same as that taken by Boyd.
