When Boyd spent the year based at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Grounds, Romberg & Boyd were designing the distinctive domed structure of the Australian Academy of Science building and were involved with the initial designs for the Sydney Myer Music Bowl. Domed structures and acoustics were therefore front of mind while Boyd was in the USA and he comments on them in this letter and again on 21 April 1957. Here Boyd describes to Romberg the acoustic difficulties encountered at an organ recital at Eero Saarinen’s domed Kresge Auditorium at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. (pdf)
