Planner’s Dream Come True (1964)
This article, written by Boyd and published in The Australian in July 1964, reviews Tapiola, the modernist garden suburb located outside Helsinki. Boyd visited and photographed Tapiola in 1964, with a particular focus on its central square and tower. Designed by a collective of Finnish architects including Aarne Ervi and built progressively through the 1950s and 1960s, the suburb is described by Boyd in glowing terms. He is particularly impressed by the development's integration with the surrounding forest, praising the naturalistic landscape design of its central square. Boyd is excited by what he describes as the “quiet goodness” of the town, describing its humanist urban planning principles and consistent design language as exemplary. He goes on to compare Tapiola favourably with Adelaide’s Elizabeth, lamenting the visual clutter and lack of tree cover in the Australian new town. Boyd suggests that a consistent, simple and ‘honest’ urban design language could improve the design taste and habits of the Australian public (pdf).
