Swedish Houses in Melbourne (1952)
Written in October 1952 for Boyd’s regular Small Homes Section column in The Age, this article begins with a general comparison of standards of housing and urban planning between Sweden and Australia. Boyd highlights the uniformity of Swedish cities compared to those in Australia, linking this to broader cultural differences between the countries: “It is the difference, translated into housing, between highly organised co-operation and our traditional individualism.” The second part of the article reports on a project by Swedish builder Wallenborg to ship prefabricated housing to Australia. Boyd notes that three Small Homes Service designs were among those fabricated in Sweden and shipped to Australia. One of these was the Neil Clerehan designed T289 type, which Boyd notes was erected in Station Street, Box Hill, in 148 working hours.
